    I used to have a 98 v6 5 speed, and it did not like to tow. It would do it, but it had a hard time just dragging a 18' Center console boat around especially on steep inclines. I say hard time but I am also not one to run my trucks hard. I would rather let it the truck slow down a little verses...

A 350 with mild upgrades should do you just fine, at least a great place to start. If its still doesn't feel exactly like you want that's when I would start...

    With the 1000 lbs tongue weight 1st thing I would start with is an add a leaf / overload spring of some sort and some good shocks. That and a good tune up to make sure everything else is tip top. towing will find the weak points for you, you just have to keep you eyes open, and constantly check...

    Just my opinion, but if you already have one, and rarely haul anything then why replace it. I pull a trailer about 60% of the time and I have never had anything but a stock one and never had any issues.
