Single Purple Wire in engine bay 1989 K1500

ICM was the culprit. I installed a new one and the engine fired immediately. Prior to that I had zero spark. I didn’t see any evidence of pinched wires or impact against the firewall so maybe it’s just coincidence. I did recently have an issue of the battery frequently draining. That was...

Single Purple Wire in engine bay 1989 K1500

That's the route I'm thinking is the ICM was possibly damaged. I'd like to test it to confirm before just replacing, but I also know these are famous for taking a dive, so it could also have just been time for it to flake out. I installed a completely new distributor 3 years ago when I...

Single Purple Wire in engine bay 1989 K1500

That's what I figured. Re-reading your post on the 4.3L using two but GM using a universal harness makes a lot of sense. KISS indeed.

Single Purple Wire in engine bay 1989 K1500

Gotcha, now I don't feel quite as crazy. Is there any advantage to running a 2nd O2 sensor? I didn't think the PCM on these older ODB1 would do anything with data from more than one sensor.

Single Purple Wire in engine bay 1989 K1500

I can't see any stripes on the wire, it looks solid purple to me unless they used a really dark color for pink. I have the manuals but I'm having a hard time tracking down a PNK/BLK color wire.

Single Purple Wire in engine bay 1989 K1500

It sure could be the O2. There is a single wire connector on the driver side coming out of the harness that connects with the O2 sensor wire. Is there another connection elsewhere? I was certain these only had a single O2 sensor on the driver side manifold, but is there a provision for a 2nd...

Single Purple Wire in engine bay 1989 K1500

I'm tracking down a no spark condition on my 1989 K1500 5.7L . While probing around the distributor I came across this single wire plug with a purple wire coming out of the main harness. For the life of me I can't find where this plugs into. I don't know that it has anything to do with my no...

Backlighting for Climate Control and 4X4 shifter always on

This definitely falls outside the normal cause for electrical issues. But you’re right, never rule out the oddball reason for a problem.

Backlighting for Climate Control and 4X4 shifter always on

Sorry it’s been so long but I want to wrap up this thread. I finally got a chance to pull out the fuse panel and see which wire was loose or bare that was causing the problem. Turns out, it was just a loose screw. The problem starting shortly after my son did some speaker work and I...

    '89 700R4 - Rebuild or Install Reman?

Got it, so in this case bigger really is better.

    '89 700R4 - Rebuild or Install Reman?

After the rebuild I do intend to tow boats with this truck. Mostly it will be my bass boat (2,500 lbs boat/trailer) and occassionally my runabout (4,500 lbs boat/trailer). Both have hydraulic surge brakes. I've seen opinions ranging on the 700R4 some say it isn't strong enough to tow a...

    '89 700R4 - Rebuild or Install Reman?

Thanks guys. Due to timing, my insanely busy schedule, and your advice I'm really leaning toward letting the shop do the rebuild even though it's quite a bit more money. Hipster is right, sure there's a warranty with the store, but that can be a fight. I have a very good relationship with the...

    '89 700R4 - Rebuild or Install Reman?

Thanks for the info Nick. Yes, I was concerned about the quality of the reman and what weaknesses they address during the rebuild. Originally the 2-3 clutch pack went out which was the reason for the rebuild 2 1/2 years ago. With the extended lead times back then and needing to get the truck...

    '89 700R4 - Rebuild or Install Reman?

I had the 700R4 in my sons '89 K1500 rebuilt about 2 1/2 years ago. This was during Covid of course and the shops I knew were over 2 months out on their schedule and reman trannies were back ordered too. I was recommended to a small shop in the area and he could get to the rebuild the...

    Brake! Warning on '89 K1500

I have an '89 K1500 with a constant BRAKE! warning on the dash. The truck had the classic mushy brake pedal and I read you can replace the OEM master cylinder with a unit from an '03 that will solve that issue. I made that swap a couple years ago and the pedal became very stiff after that, but...
