Why won't a 98 work? Is it a one piece bell housing?

The round wiring plug on the side is different. A 96/97 has 13 wires an a 98+ has 15 if I remember right. That's the only difference. The bellhousing looks different but it would still physically bolt in as the bolt pattern is still the same. The wiring is why it won't work.

You must get a 96/97. 98 is two piece. Just went through this on my 96.

As I said above the wiring is the difference, the bell housing has no effect on it fitting or not...

Sure the trans will physically bolt up, however, at the least the starter and front braces won't work.

how does the starter not bolt up?

and the braces arent really necessary.

Thats what I was told last week but I just checked Napa and the part numbers are the same. Does that matter anyways because you can't use the 98 trans.

I'll echo what others have said, be very careful with craigslist when it comes to rebuilt transmissions. You could get burned easily
