Alt+ shortcuts don't work for Linux, but unicode does.

In Linux you hold Ctrl+Shift and type "u00b0" and you get "°". Ctrl+Shift and "u00a7" gets you "§".

I don't recall if I tried it with Dos/Windows, or only Linux. I've been running Linux for at least 10 years now, probably longer.
