I used the torch when swapping bushing on an old jeep. When I replaced the bushings on my 2 door I went a little different. Used some old drill bits and drill enough meet out of the rubber that it all fell out. Then cut the outer shell with a sawzall. Start to finish it only took a few minutes per bushing. Got the job done without the fumes and the horrible cleanup of smoldering burnt rubber. My $.02
I've burned out bushings with only a heat gun. It takes a few minutes for them to catch fire, but once they do, the extra air turns it into a roaring fire. The hotter fire also means less smoke and pollution.
Ball joint press is a good alternative.
This is my go-to for everything now. Ever since I bought one I keep finding new uses for it.
Springs + heat is generally a no-no. It may not be as big of a deal as I'm imagining but I'd rather not risk it.
Next time I do ball joints, I'm going to buy one.... or sooner, if I have another use.
