I had the same problem(98 burb 5.7l) I replaced both positive and negative battery cables, no dice.....took the starter in and had it tested at autozone put it back on. It kept doing the same thing. Finally replaced the starter even tho they told me it was ok and that solved the problem. Hope this helps.

Yes I'm going through the same thing with my truck. Watch out on the vortec that you have a good clean uncracked distributor cap and rotor, moisture gets in there and carbon buildup too. It'll misfire and this will eventually kill the starter and flywheel.
