Good call on the rec port heads, they're a fair amount better than the cathedral ports.

Depends on the application, for max effort HP...yes. My 6.0l Z28 makes well over 500hp at the crank with 317 cathedrals and a smallish cam 230/232 (.595/.585 lift).

Lots of reading at ls1tech.com...days worth. If it has been tried, it's probably on there.

Are you going carb'd or aftermarket ECU?

If you're set on 6.0l find a good LQ4 block and then you can add better heads/internals from there. I have a stock LQ4 in my '49 and a cammed LQ9(6.0l with factory flat tops basically) in my Z28. Gen IV rods are supposedly better.

What is the HP goal and application?

Yes, I think the cathedrals were a little better on low end power. They kind of made different tradeoffs.

My 5.3 makes well over 500 hp at the crank with stock 862s, 218/227 cam, and some boost. :)

BTW, you can throw on the smaller 4.8/5.3 heads on the 6.0 and they make more power than the 317 because of compression increase. At least I seem to recall that on one of Holdener's vids.
