polishing tailgate band

wondering what the best method and material to use when polishing the tailgate band on these trucks. the clear coat on mine is yellowing, and the band itself is kinda beat up. i'd like to get the yellowness and dullness out of it a little bit. should i rub it good with aluminum polish and a rag, then buff it dry or with a compound?
any help is appreciated. thanks

I buffed mine out with aluminum polish then compound, then I repainted the letters black. After the paint cured I waxed it out with some cleaner wax.
