Maybe I did blow the fuse in the head unit?

Do you have a multimeter? If so, see if you're getting 12V on the remote wire when the head unit is on.

Don't use a test light or anything similar to figure this out, anything that draws over 750mA or so of current will pop that fuse if it hasn't been popped already. This is why I always recommend that people running three or more amps use a relay to run the remote circuit. You should be fine with only two, though.
