Need advice on rear end.

In the long run it’s a good idea to find another rear end and build it. The G-80 are not too bad for light use however when they eventually wear out they become Gov bombs, as when they fail it makes a huge mess. I dont have the pics handy but when the G-80 expired in my Yukon there was nothing salvageable it literally exploded and ate everything in the rear end. I then swapped in an open diff with an aftermarket locker and it was a solid upgrade.

Take it apart and inspect the axles, if they are not grooved/pitted install new seals, repair the brakes as neccessary and drive it.

Nice man, I'd like to know what the details are on your rear end setup if you don't mind and have the info. I'm not super well versed in them.

The 8.5" and smaller Gov-Locks have a very poor reputation. The 9.5" and larger Gov-Locks do quite well until they wear out--but they don't explode like the smaller ones.

Even the 8.5 open differential has explosion tendencies.

Yes I won’t ever run a Gov lock. I like the open diffs so I can easily add a locker…

No, the best bet is replacing the G-80 locking unit with an aftermarket limited slip or locker. You can keep your gears and axles just replace the Center section.

...or start with a 9.5" axle instead of the fragile-OEM-guts 8.5".
