It's a crimp... Freightliner uses them too.

That is the original GM splice pack. The new ones with the silicone and heat shrink are even sketchier looking.

I try to run new wire but remove whats not needed to reduce the clutter

I've never really removed any factory wiring, probably cuz I'm always adding new **** to my truck
