Come on man! It a Gmt-400 it'll always get Ya home! You should know that

158K mile 4L60E toast in Ponchatoula, LA...from FL on the way to Corpus Christi (500+ miles left) - Harley on the trailer, and 2 cats in a huge cage inside the truck. Tow-bar'd the rest of the way by the Dodge...

My 140K or so mile 4L60E left my 94 Suburban broke down in Houston when I lived in TN, over Christmas

Another 4L60E left my 95 Impala SS broke down in Houston when I lived in ATL GA over July 4th

I went through three 700R4's in my white 92 ECLB, one of them quit when I was near LaGrange TX, swapped it out and made it to somewhere in LA, swapped another out, made it back to ATL, then that one smoked a couple years later once I'd moved back to Houston so at least I was "local" when that one went!!!

One thing I've come to learn, if it's a 700R4 or 4L60E...you just know, it's gonna blow

Knock on wood, i have never had a 700r4/4l60e let me down. I have destroyed several, 4 in 1 year in my 98 1/2 ton. It never failed to limp home where i could pull it out.

Mine have all pretty much been fairly dramatic sunshell failure. BANG! Then dead in the water.

Planetary gears are my arch nemesis. Mine had a "BEAST" sunshell in it.

Thanks for all the input. I did end up having it rebuilt and it was the planetary gears. Fortunately cost was about half of what I expected it to be. The amount of downshifting the burb did while towing home would have blown the busted 4L60e for sure.

And some will tell you that GM began using better sunshells at some point after the GMT400 series. Not!

It's like a 100K mile fuse in the transmission. Blammo!

^ actually, they were improved to a more hardened sunshell in 1998, but they seem to be just as prone to the failure.
