I have a 95 k2500 4wd with a 5 speed manual. The first gear is very low range, it has the access panels on both sides of the transmission and external slave cylinder.
What is it. Finding conflicting info and cannot find a picture that matches what I have.

NV4500, super easy to identify by the granny low gear, and the identical covers on either side (those are for PTO installation.)

Here's a '96 unit

And here's a '94 unit with extended tailshaft housing/parking brake (3500HD)

The NV4500 RPO NW3 manual trans has a special lubricating oil requirement, for the record (attached).

(edit: Some of these notes below are in error, see later posts)

The other GMT400 manual transmission, the NV3500, had a wide ratio in the 4x4 (RPO M50) and close ratio in the 2x4 (RPO MG5).

GMT400 engine / trans combinations info attached, from 1998 FSM.

Good info here, particularly about different year's NV4500 gear ratios.

Uhmmm...
C/K 1/2t trucks got the RPO-MG5. (wide ratio)
S/10's got the RPO-M50. (close ratio)

Internally, the only differences are the gear ratios, everything else is the same.
Externally, the 1/2 ton NV3500 has the shifter in a different location than the dime's.
The S-truck NV3500 has a longer tail shaft.
NV did upgrades to both versions over the years.
Newer ones are better.

Thanks, my notes (in post #3) were in error in a big way. Now I'm sorry I started down this rabbit hole

You made me look deeper and it's more complex than I (and perhaps you) stated.

The spec sheet from the 1998 FSM I posted (see my post #3) indicates...

- the MG5 (NV3500 wide ratio) was used all 4.3L and almost all 5.0L, on both 1500 and 2500 models (only the 5.0L C/K 2500 2D excab), with exception where the 5.0L got the MW3 (C/K 2500 2D regcab MW3 NV4500)

- M50 (NV3500 close ratio) was optional (never std), and only on certain 1500 and 2500 vehicles

It appears the NW3 (NV4500) was used on all 5.7L and 7.4L for which the engine was standard equipment; there's a few cases there the 5.7L engine was "optional" and only a NV3500 is shown.

This isn't a "summary" above, the combinations seem quite engine and vehicle specific... which I likely makes sense.

Again, this is for 1998, I didn't check other years.

I'm not trying to make this ^^^ the definitive list of vehicle / engine / trans combinations. @sewlow made me look more closely and I've learned, and am trying to show, that it's a widely-varying arrangement.

Easiest way I know is see if the bellhousing unbolts from the trans. If it is all one piece it is a 3500. A 4500 will had a detachable bell. I will say the RPO codes are a good way to get some info. But in the case of my 95 2500 the RPO codes showed it came with a 4500 but had a 3500 in it. Some one at one point swapped the wrong trans into it.
