So here it is, a free to me 1996 GMC 2500, 4x4, 5.7, that belong to my uncle who wrecked it into a palm tree 5 years ago and recently kicked the bucket passing it down to me.

My goal is to have a nice, mostly stock, retro tow rig for short hauls in state with under #10k behind it. Most often will be trips an hour or so away with 4wheelers and a RCSB ranger on a trailer, or dragging more busted junk home to piss my lovely wife off.

Happen to find a 99tahoe I can buy the whole front clip off for $400 so I’m going to do that tomorrow. Also I have a set of early 2000s power wagon wheels which are supposedly some of the strongest factory wheels ever produced. Bonus points the OEM gmc caps with and they look nice to me. So I’m getting a set of 255/75/17s I had in my ranger for a few month out in those wheels tomorrow.

Lol, "a little rough". I'd trade all my rust, for that banana shaped core support any day.

That's a really nice looking truck.

Super pumped about the RPO codes! I had my fingers crossed for 4.10s, and I’m glad it’s a vortex not TBI 350. I’m not real familiar with whats added with the tow package besides a hitch, but I am very familiar with G80s and I know they aren’t well liked in 10bolts (killed two myself). But, they are tough in the 14bolts and should work well off road.

Anyone know what ring gear size the rear is? I have a bunch of Hummer H2 9.5sf parts on my shelf.

The passenger side is a little beat, I vaguely remember him adjusting some cattle fence posts with that side of the truck. Once I get it repaired and mostly sorted out I may pay a body shop to do their best at replacing that fender flare and pulling as many dents as possible.

The interior isn’t too bad, mostly needs a scrubbing, new steering wheel, and headliner. But those are things I’ll do once it’s on the road.

it should be a 10.5 not all 2500s were full float though pull one of your rear center caps to find out if you are semi float or full float I think on the square bodies there were 9.5 semi float 8 lug 14 bolts and full floats were 10.5 I think when the gmt400s came out the 9.5 semi float 8 lug 14 bolt went away and both semi float and full float axles were 10.5

I'm going to guess he has a 9.5 due to his vacuum operated JB7 brakes.

I could be wrong but I thought that the 454ss rear and the 2wd and 4x4 6 lug 14 bolts were the only 9.5s on these trucks and if you got 8 lug you got a 10.5 weather it is a full float or a semi float dose any one have any thing to confirm this or to prove it incorrect

I did pull a wheel earlier and don’t remember seeing a full float, axle. So that’s good my beefy diff cover will fit!
