Just a thought I had, it seems to me that a 10k trailer ought to have a 12k coupler. Let's say the rig did weigh 12k but you had 2k worth of tongue, that's still only 10k on the trailer axles. I doubt the DOT man would make you disconnect the trailer to prove such a thing. Obviously if the tongue puts the truck over you're screwed.

It is still illegal. Buuuttttt I guess it just depends on how it looks. If its a heaped up pile of stuff that covers the whole trailer then youll probably have troubles. If its something that doesnt look as heavy then they probably wouldnt give it a second look. Just make sure the trailer axles can handle it as well as the brakes.

Was that for me or him? Because as far as I know they'll only weigh the axles.

You. A 10k trailer is rated for 10k. They should weight the trailer off the truck but they likely wont. But if the trailer is registered for 10k, and you weight out 10k with the trailer attached that isn't likely going to sit right.

Many times they will look at your GCWR anyway.

I mean it doesn't sound right to me. I wonder if they have a threshold where they'll make you unhook to make sure?
