So just an update here, went to the junkyard and failed to find anything that’d work.

Both the manual trucks PCMs here had a different pin out then my trucks PCM, and the prom chips were also the older style smaller ones.

I think my only bet now is to get a custom made chip. Was looking at harristuning.com. They’re pricey but it may be my only option.

See this thread... the .pdf I posted there might give you some leads. Look for a relevant broadcast code and then dig deeper (I'll look too):

That .pdf file shows many for your ECU w/ 5.7L and manual transmission, here are but two:

BLHK 1994 34417 16206044 16196395 6046 6015 G3 L05 5.7 MAN
BLHL 1994 34417 16206048 16196395 6049 6025 G3 L05 5.7 MAN

The MEMCALs have broadcast codes BLHK and BLHL.

Now, for the handful of broadcast codes listed in that .pdf (that is, not just the two above), I would turn to TunerCat's CALDATA program to learn more about the intended platform.

Paring the list of MEMCAL codes by using CALDATA, I would then start Googling to see if someone's got a MEMCAL with an appropriate code for sale, or if some other means of acquiring the firmware was possible.

I may look further into this as well, I find it fun.

Awesome thank you! Hopefully I can find something!

In my case it just has to be the right style. It has to be the longer PROM with the blue top that unclips almost like a stick of ram from a computer, not the smaller one that just snaps in.

I assume the 16196395 ECU only accepts the one style, so looking through that list for MEMCALs that were deployed in the 16196395 (or the later replacement, 16197427) seems to me like a good place to start. I expect the 16196395 to only accept the "long ones" such as I pictured in an earlier post.

Then, use CALDATA (from TunerCat) to sort through the broadcast codes that look like options to find a list of candidates.

Finally, start doing Google searches to see if you can find/buy the broadcast code(s) which are worthy, e.g., on eBay or wherever. Copying one is an option too, but let's save that for later discussion.

Maybe someone else on GMT400 has a better method of doing this, but this is how I would approach it.

FYI, I've (re)installed my registered version of CALDATA, so let me know if I can help.

In that .pdf list of broadcast codes I referenced earlier, these "platform codes" are of interest:

K1 - K1500
K2 - k2500 (may have different emissions)
G1 - G10 van 1/2 ton
G2 - G20 van 3/4 ton

There may be others. CALDATA lists the various platform codes.

CALDATA also allows one to search for MEMCAL broadcast codes, e.g., using the model year, engine, transmission, ECU...

Searching through the various MEMCAL broadcast codes, it appears the 16196395 was deployed on the G2/G3 vans w/ manual transmissions.

As CALCATA reports (needs to be cross-checked, don't assume this is correct or an exhaustive list):

BHNB was G2 w/ 5.7L manual, Cali emissions
BJDU/BLHL/BYXS was G3 w/ 5.7L manual, no emissions.

Note that the last of those, BYXS, was released in 1997 as part of a service program of some sort, supposedly bulletin S/B 67-71-53A is relevant(?)

The 1994 C/K trucks with manual transmissions appear to have received a different ECU.

I think you could get a 16196395 ECU to work in a truck with a G-van MEMCAL, provided the wiring is correct.

I also think it's worth considering a 16197427 ECU with an appropriate MEMCAL as a replacement for your 16196395.

Ok thank you very much! Seems like I'm going to have to do some hunting for this... Lol

I was able to find a BJDU quickly! Its only $50! CALDATA reports its for a 94 van with a 5.7 manual! This is probably just what I need!!!

What about a BMLF?

For a 94 G20 or G25 van with a 5.7 manual. Would need a 16197427 PCM though.

Can you get a BMLF? After looking around, I believe that finding a specific broadcast code MEMCAL isn't so easy

Try searching for "TBIchips.com" with Google, maybe that'll turn up some leads.

What I might suggest is keeping your existing MEMCAL and installing it on an adapter...

You must be registered for see images attach

and then getting a proper firmware load for the manual 5.7, burn it into an appropriate ROM, and install it in your ECU.

This may sound difficult but it's not too bad, esp. if you can get a third-party to supply the $0D firmware for you already burned into a ROM... then it's just plug-n-play.

Adapters like that pictured were once available from Moates.com, but he's no longer in business. I suspect they can still be had if you look around. They...

- fit nicely into the ECU,

- allow you to retain the current MEMCAL's "CAL" function (the MEMCAL plugs onto the adapter), and

- employ a different firmware load via a separate ROM (which gets inserted into the 24-pin DIP socket you see on the left side).

I've used these on a number of vehicles over the years.
