I say that because when I was in the Daaco catalog back in 2013 it listed the B82 as being used in 4.3 up to 5.7 and the B81 was listed as 6.5 and 7.4.

From what I'm gathering from their 2017 catalog, it's as I described. B81 for diesels, big blocks and small blocks (down to the 350), and B82 for the 305s on down. Although there's one weird case where they actually recommend the B82 for the 6.2L diesel/4L80E in a half ton truck...

EDIT - And it seems like they go either way when it comes to the 350 in some situations, B81 or B82.

After digging into things a little more this morning, I'm kind of thinking I'll just stick to the plan and grab a Dacco B82 for now. It's kind of hard to justify spending a ton of money on a converter for a junk yard transmission going behind a stock 4.3L V6. I would like to be certain I have the recommended stall speed for my engine, though. I can get a B82 for $125 or so after the core refund, so that's not too bad.

If (more likely when) I manage to break this 4L80E and I end up having it rebuilt, then I'll spend $5-600 or more on a decent converter.

On a slightly related note I've revised my plan for the cooler lines. I'm going to adapt all the fittings to -6AN and run Russell ProFlex braided hose all the way.

As always, I'm open to opinions on any of this.

Just my opinion, but I think a stock 4L80e should be just fine behind a vortec V6. I just don’t see how you could break it with that motor. But I may not be fully understanding how hard you push your transmissions.

Well I didn't think I'd break that last $2700 4L60E rebuild with it, either... What can I say, I'm good at breaking automatics.

I'm not particularly worried about breaking this one other than the fact that it's got a lot of miles on it. Considering my track record it's just one of those hope for the best but prepare for the worst kind of things.

I'd be pretty upset if I bought a nice converter for this swap and then the transmission went out 5K miles later. Which is why I'm thinking I'll probably stick with the Dacco B82 for now. The parts-buying OCD just gets the best of me sometimes and I start second guessing myself.

Does the trans have a sticker on it? Can you get the VIN off the donor? I'm sure there's a way to see what it came with stock.

That's a good idea, I'll check the transmission case for markings next time I'm over there. I can check and see if the donor truck is still at the salvage yard too. How would I go about finding which converter it had with the VIN? I don't recall an RPO code or anything for that, but it's been a long time since I looked at my CompNine papers.

My only guess is to call the dealer with the VIN and ask for a torque converter part number.

Good call. I'll see what I can find out.
