1991 chevy 4x4 5lm60 to nv 4500?

If you have 3:42 gears the low first won't really seem that low. I swapped a nv4500 into my 88 k1500 and actually have to take off in 1st to have any power. With my k3500 4:10 I never use 1st unless towing.

Both our nv4500s we don't even use first with an unloaded trailer. But then again they make a little more power than these chevys lol

I start in 2nd with 3.42's with no problems.

My truck has some other factors that probably make it more sluggish taking off in 2nd.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that the OP may want to factor in the axle ratio before making a decision to go with the low geared first or not. I'm certainly happy I went with the lower geared 1st having 3:42.
