    Suspension lift questions

<<I have no experience with 6bt swaps, but i do recall reading that a bodylift is almost mandatory when doing the swap. I know you said you measured, but thats just what i remeber reading According to this link, it makes life easier but not required. In my case, I might end up having to use a...

    Suspension lift questions

<<First of all, awesome rig! Thanks! <<Second, do you have a steering stabilizer? It's doesn't have a steering stabilizer. <<I'm sure you've got to have a little bit of a lift to clear the larger oil pan There's enough clearance to remove the lift and clear the pan <<If I'm not mistaken...

    Suspension lift questions

I've got a 1996 Chevy Tahoe 4x4 with a 4" Rancho Suspension lift and 3" body lift. It's also got a Cummins 6BT engine up front which adds about 500 lbs of weight up front over stock. The tires are 35". The handling is miserable and ponderous. The steering reacts very slowly to steering...

    Removing suspension lift kit

I checked that and it seems like it will clear the front differential. Does anyone know how many hours of labor am I looking to remove this lift? Now back to my other question on a replacement mount: It seems like they only make replacement mounts for 2001-2010 Chevy's. Will this part work or...

    Removing suspension lift kit

Well, once I remove the suspension lift, then I'll work on the body lift but that's going to be more complicated. Now back to my other question on a replacement mount: It seems like they only make replacement mounts for 2001-2010 Chevy's. Will this part work or could it be adapted for my 96...

    Removing suspension lift kit

Well, the Cummins 6BT engine that's under the hood would not have enough room without the Body Lift. At the very least, I would have to get a hood scoop and go to electric fans.

    Removing suspension lift kit

Thanks for the tip. I went to Cognito's website but I could only find replacement mounts for 2001-2010 Chevy's. Will this part work or could it be adapted for my 96? http://www.cognitomotorsports.com/products/695/Differential_Mount_Fix_-_2001-2010_Chevy_1500HD_4wd.html

    Removing suspension lift kit

Oh I see. So I would need to weld another mount to the frame. I want the rig stock height. Currently, it's also got a 3" body lift so it's got a combined lift of 7" plus 35" tires. The vehicle currently drives as if you're not connected to the road. It's also very hard to climb into the...

Does this mean I need a whole new differential?

    Removing suspension lift kit

I've got a 1996 Chevy Tahoe that has a 4” suspension lift made by Rancho. What is involved in removing this lift? I've heard that there may have been some components that were replaced or modified when the lift was put on. If so, which components will I have to get to lower this vehicle to...

    Need engine experts

Bummer, it looks like there is nothing good on this engine except maybe 1 head. There is a junkyard nearby that sells used short blocks for $150 and $150 for each head that has been magnafluxed. That comes out to $450. Not sure if I want to put that kind of money into this vehicle.

No, it's not recessed. But it looks like that due to the way the light is shining at it.

    Need engine experts

I've got a 1999 Tahoe with a bad engine. When I opened the engine up, I found that the pistons and rods were broken on the front 2 cylinders (cylinder 1 & 2). The previous owner said that the engine blew up (with a loud bang) while starting it in the morning in his driveway. The block is...

Flat towing with a tow bar

I'm going to be flat towing with a tow bar a 1972 Chevy 4x4 from Washington to Texas. I'll be going through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico and Texas. It'll be around 2500 miles total. I'll be using my Suburban. I'm pretty sure that the truck will need to be licensed to tow it...

    350 Vortec to TBI conversion

Excellent, I think this is exactly what I'll do. I found a place that sells Vortec 350 short blocks for $150 and they'll magnaflux the heads. Based on all the responses, it looks like I'm better off to keep this truck Vortec. And the 350 TBI will go into my 1972 Chevy truck instead.

    What's the best gas mileage youv'e got....in your 4x4

I'm averaging 24 mpg in my 1996 Chevy 2 door Tahoe. It's got 6" lift and 35" tires. It's powered by a Cummins 6BT and has an NV4500 5 speed transmission behind it.

    350 Vortec to TBI conversion

I mean cylinders 1 (right) and 2 (left). Any chance the Vortec cylinder heads are still OK. They've got 160k miles on them. If there are cracks between the valve seats, would they be visible?

    350 Vortec to TBI conversion

Would this be the smarter way to go? Would the Vortec intake bolt up to the heads on the TBI engine? Would I swap the transmission valve body? By the way, I'm not exactly sure what killed the original engine. The only thing I know for sure is that it exploded during start up and that it...

    350 Vortec to TBI conversion

    1. The Vortec engine in the Tahoe is totally destroyed. It has a hole through the bottom of the oil pan. 2. I have a complete Chevy 350 TBI with 20k miles on it and the transmission. 3. TBI Chevy 350's are known for longevity. Vortec engines are problematic. Intake manifolds gaskets leak...

    350 Vortec to TBI conversion

I've got a 1999 Chevy Tahoe with a blown engine and worn out transmission. I also have a very low mileage Chevy 350 TBI and 4L60E transmission out of a 1994 Chevy van. I want to put this whole 350 TBI and transmission setup into the Tahoe. I would like to keep it TBI if possible for its...

    Fuel economy: 1999 Tahoe

Good point. If I stay with the 5.7 Vortec, it'll be the only vehicle I own that is not illegal. So what do I need to do to bring the fuel economy up from the 16 mpg highway EPA estimate to something I can live with like 20 mpg?

    Fuel economy: 1999 Tahoe

I think you may be confused with the 5.7L diesel engine GM released in the late 70's. They were exactly like what you described. The 6.2L even today has a loyal following and are known for being more reliable and fuel efficient than the 6.5L. The 6.2L in my 1982 Suburban has been so reliable...

    Fuel economy: 1999 Tahoe

Believe it or not, the old 6.2L diesel in my 1982 Suburban pulls slightly better fuel economy than any 6BT Cummins I've owned. However, the Cummins has a lot more power and were in a heavier 4x4 truck.

MPG Question (point me in the right direction)

Does what you describe also apply to the Vortec motor? Back when I was driving vehicles with gas engines, I used to set the timing so it was on the verge of pinging.
