I just replaced the engine in my 94 z71 and had the same issue. It turned out i forgot to plug the connector into my oil pressure sensor, which is located to the right of the distributor if you're in front looking aft. So it's possible that you've lost comunication with that sensor.

Sounds dumb, but try tapping on the gauge.
Ever since I put in a high flow oil pump, my oil pressure at start up is regularly 80 and above and once in a while the gauge gets stuck above 80. A couple of taps on the gauge and it lets go and works as it should. Worth a shot.

I have an '89 1500. That style of gauge can be hard to read. I'm not sure if mine is "pegged" or zero. It's just white. I'll try tapping on it. I don't think it would have a separate fuse.

Its either unplugged, has a broken wire, or needs a pressure sender. Works the same as the fuel gauge, if the resistance is too high, or open, it will read full/high, not empty/low.

Thanks. I suspect several loose wires on this thing. The speedometer works every other day. The previous owner says he replaced the speed sensor right before I bought it (a few weeks ago).

Previous owners are your worst enemy, Justin is correct, it's probably a bad wire somewhere along the way.
