Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

Just got back on the forum for the first time in a while and read through all the recent posts on this thread. I'm curious as to why it gets such a visceral reaction when someone converts to carb from fuel injection. Its like those against it think you're trying to make them swap theirs. I...

    Water leak or condensation?

I’m having an odd water issue in the passenger floorboard. I noticed that there’s a wet spot in the center of the carpet. Looked underneath the carpet and the floor is wet, but no standing water in door sill area and kick panel is dry. Went ahead and used some rtv on the two screws in the cowl...

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

The gen. 6 454 numbers are pretty dismal. I think they only had 290 hp, 410 ft lbs from the factory IIRC. I'm not gonna get it on a dyno, but I probably picked up a few ponies with the conversion since I bumped up the timing and added longtubes. But it'll mainly be used to reliably get my boat...

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

Mine's running well. I'm sure there's not much difference in performance since they're both reputable carbs. The truck was underpowered before the swap, and its still underpowered with the holley. But at least it runs and starts better than with a worn out fuel injection system.

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

Wanted to report back about the fuel pressure regulator. I initially tried using a single stage Holley billet regulator and it was unable to get the fuel pressure under 12 psi to the carb. So I installed a dual pressure regulator and it works perfect with a new factory style pump. Got it timed...

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

Like Erik the Awful said, you can clock them any way you like. The way I’ve found that works best for adjustability without having the vacuum advance canister interfere with the firewall or intake is to have it clocked about 90 degrees counterclockwise from how yours is.

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

That’s exactly what happened to me. The floats were set so high from the factory, that it was over the sight glass and I thought no fuel was in the carb. Lol but it’s all good now. Starting up and idling smoothly. Ready to get this thing tuned and back on the street. Thanks for all the help.

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

So I’ve almost got the vortec to carb swap (1998 7.4 liter) wrapped up. I’m down to the wiring for the fuel pump. I’ve hooked the ignition wire(pink) from the coil to the battery terminal on the HEI and the tach signal wire from the coil(white) to the tach port on the HEI. However, the fuel pump...

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

Haven't ordered it yet. I'm doing the conversion over the next month or two as I get some extra cash. Hope to start on the fuel system next weekend and I'll keep yall updated on how the regulator works. Thanks.

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

If I'd known that I'd be going with a carb when I replaced my fuel pump, I would've gotten the TBI pump and saved some money. But you live and you learn. Does anyone know what would be a good psi to set the return line pressure too?

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

I've used this holley regulator before on a TBI truck I converted to carb, but that had a factory fuel pressure of 12-14 psi. Not sure it would be able to handle the psi of the vortec pump. Also, the dual regulator is nice in order to regulate the return line pressure back to the pump.

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

I recently cleaned the tank and replaced the pump with the Delphi unit for the vortec trucks. Was planning to use the aeromotive dual pressure regulator for EFI to carb conversions. Any idea on what psi the return fuel supply would be best set at? Pic of the regulator I plan to use is attached...

Thanks a lot. Will be ordering these tomorrow. Never would have found this without your links.

Carb swapped ‘97 vortec - SUCCESS!!!

Bout to swap my 7.4 vortec to carb. The only thing I don’t have figured out is how to go from the hard fuel lines to the AN lines I’d like to use. Is there an adapter fitting that’s commonly used to go from the flared line to AN? I’d prefer not to trim the factory lines if possible. Thanks for...

    Code p0122 and shuddering

Thanks man. Got a buddy with a snap on scan tool that we’re gonna use this week to get some live data as well. Hopefully we can get this problem worked out.

    Code p0122 and shuddering

Kevin, I’ve had some things come up in the last month and have not figured out the issue. I’ll look at the service manuals soon and see if I can find the problem. If so, I’ll post back with a solution. GoToGuy, thanks for the suggestion. I’m having issues downloading those files, but have used...

Was this ever resolved? If so, what was the problem?

    Code p0122 and shuddering

Well, I’m back with another issue I’m struggling through. I’ve got a 1998 k3500 4x4 with 7.4 and nv4500. Recently, my truck started shuddering in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear when accelerating. Not noticeable in 1st and 2nd. It does this once it warms up, but not when it’s cold. My scan tool says it’s...

    AC clutch not engaging

Finally got some time to get back on the truck. Tested everything y’all recommended. Compressor engaged when ran directly off the battery and switches were testing good. So I took it by a buddy’s house who has gauges and evacuation system. Turns out I have a Freon leak and that was the problem...

    AC clutch not engaging

Thanks for all the input guys. I’m going to pick up a probing tool this weekend if I can find one and follow the procedures y’all wrote. I’ve never been great with electrical issues, so hopefully I’ll learn some things in the process. Will post back with results. Thanks again

    AC clutch not engaging

I did test for voltage at connectors to the low and high pressure switches with a multimeter with the key in the on position, but truck not running. Each had around 11.5 volts. Guess I'm not fully understanding of how the switches work. I'll do more research and try to do what you mentioned. not...

Thanks whirlybird. That’s what I was afraid of. But oh well, it’s only money. Lol

    AC clutch not engaging

I recently got the AC charged in my 98 k3500. I drove it home from the shop and everything worked great. Got in it a few days later and the air wouldn’t get cold. The compressor wasn’t engaging. My knowledge is limited on AC issues, but here’s what I tried. First, i tapped on the relay, then...

    Jumper wire in fuse panel

There was a trailer brake controller on the truck. I took it out and plan to install a new one at some point. Didn’t think about that.

    Jumper wire in fuse panel

The wire is going to the 30 pin on the relay. I will get out there later tonight and see if it’s exiting the fuse panel underneath. The other end of the wire is going into the heated mirror fuse location. I realized my pic didn’t show that very well in, case that makes a difference.
