Trans slips a bit at start of 1st gear ONLY in 4x4 LOW

I have a fairly recently rebuilt 4L60E transmission in my '97 K1500 with 4.3L v6 (4x4 floor shift). It works perfectly in 2WD and 4WD high. In 4x4 Low, from a start, 1st gear seems to slip quite a lot to about 2mph before engaging fully. Given that the trans works perfectly when the transfer...

    New Engine

Sounds like you're not into it a whole lot of money yet. IMO, you'd be better off looking to swap in a 4.8L or 5.3L V8 LM7 from an '00-'02 truck. You can buy a whole Yukon or Tahoe with a working 5.3 in the $500 to $1000 range and not need to buy anything else other than V8 motor mounts and...

Info wanted on V6 to V8 swap please

If you're going to the trouble of swapping in a V8, I'd suggest making it a gen 3 LM7 (drive-by-cable '00 - '02). To go from 4.3 to 5.7, you need to change the computer and wiring harness anyway, so jump up to a cheaper, more modern and more fuel efficient engine in the process. The 4L60E in...

    K1500 Rear axle swap (6-lug 10-bolt to 6-lug 14-bolt sf)

Thanks for adding info about the 1344 to 1350 conversion u-joint. I forgot to include that in the original post. Follow-up: As of today, my pinion seal is leaking and my conversion u-joint is notchy. The G80 works great. IIRC, I used the parking brake cables from the 14b axle. Under heavy...

    K1500 Rear axle swap (6-lug 10-bolt to 6-lug 14-bolt sf)

Sounds like good advice to me. I live in a rust-belt, so everything on mine had a bit of corrosion. I don't think that a 3M pad would cut through the rust, but I'd give it a go if I had to do it again to stay conservative.

    K1500 Rear axle swap (6-lug 10-bolt to 6-lug 14-bolt sf)

I cleaned off the rust with 120 grit and then used 200 grit to smooth it down. To your point, to clear the rust and polish the surface, I only run the sandpaper parallel with the seal. The seals were leaking already. In my experience, the reason the seals leak is that they got a bit torn from...

    K1500 Rear axle swap (6-lug 10-bolt to 6-lug 14-bolt sf)

Yeah .. I looked at an Eaton Truetrac for this axle. Money won out. The Truetrac was going to run me $550-600 and the GovLock cost me $80 including the 3.73 ring gear. I'm running a 4.3L V6, so I'm not really too worried about overpowering it. Plus I don't do any serious off-roading. I just need...

    K1500 Rear axle swap (6-lug 10-bolt to 6-lug 14-bolt sf)

Additional note: Sand the axles where the axle seals will touch the axles to reduce potential seal tears and leaks. Also, sand about one inch of the unshiny drive shaft where it exits the transfer case (or transmission if you're doing this in a 2wd). This should make sure that the drive shaft...

    K1500 Rear axle swap (6-lug 10-bolt to 6-lug 14-bolt sf)

Thanks for pointing to this additional reference. This is both a record of what I did (for myself), and also it's a little different because I bought the axle with the springs attached, which meant I didn't have to mess with the u-bolts. I did, however, have to drag the 10-bolt out and then...

    K1500 Rear axle swap (6-lug 10-bolt to 6-lug 14-bolt sf)

For record keeping as much as anything, I'll post what I did here. I picked up a 14 bolt semi-floating (axle clips) axle with leaf springs attached from a 2500. It has the 13" drum brakes and a 7200 lb GVW. It was billed as having a posi, but there was no G80 code on the RPO sheet. Not...

    swap/upgrades to front calipers

I bought 2500 front calipers and m/c based on this thread. Turned out, the m/c and calipers are the same as on my 1500. That was because there are TWO brake packages available on the 2500: One for 7200 lb and one for 8600 lb gvw. If you want (slightly) larger calipers, you need the 8600 lb...

    swap/upgrades to front calipers

3500 calipers will clear, but the 1500/2500 rotor is too thin.

    The Stupid Axle Questions Thread

I bought a 1993 14-bolt SF 6-lug axle from a 4x4 2500 for my 1997 6-lug 4x4 1500. I also bought the 2500's master cylinder and front calipers. The axle has 13" diameter drums but the drum depth is 3" and the pads are about 2-7/8" wide. The drums do NOT pull off with the hubs. A wheel cylinder...

    Will a '93 Suburban front clip fit a '97 W/T

Hi: I'm a newbie here at GMT400.com. I've searched this forum for info on my question but didn't find anything. Seems like it should be in the "body" section, but maybe I have that wrong. I just picked up a '97 K1500 w/t with front end damage. I need to replace the hood, bumper, rad support...
