what year did Chevy start with air bags?

I see different threads from time to time stating they have air bag equipped trucks, what year did this start? Just curious because my 99 2500 doesnt have an air bag equipped steering wheel. I popped off the center today and its just a red and a green wire for the horn control?

2500's are over the GVWR limit and as such, are exempt from SRS rules....at least they were up to that year.

The 1500's started somewhere around 95-96 I believe....

Yeah, I believe the 1500s received air bags in the mid 90s standard but not 2500s and 3500s. I have a 97 2500 with no airbags either....

...just don't crash.....

1500s started in 95 IIRC. 2500 and 3500 trucks (400s) didn't come with any

ahhh that makes sense! thanks for the replies..as far as airbags go, dont rely on the fact that its going to work. I HAD a 2001 Dodge 1500, went head on with a Honda Accord almost 1 year ago at 45 mph. My bumper was pushed in and under the engine, bags never deployed. I hear about lots of this happening on various cars and trucks.

Mine is a 1995 K1500 and they only came with an air bag on the driver side. Just so they could put those unuseable cup holders on the passenger side.

I'm not sure about the 2500s or 3500s on the driver's side, but I don't think any of them had passenger side bags.

Correct. The GMT-400s never got them.

Funny this came up because I noticed this on my 99 2500 right before I left. I knew it didn't have a passenger air bag, but never noticed it didn't have a drivers.

2500+ didn't have drivers or passenger airbags.
