Has anyone put a turbo 400 into a 97 vortec truck? My 4l60e has just been a royal pain and it will eventually be a trail rig so might try to swap a t400 into it so I dont have to deal with this 4l60 anymore.

What all would be involved to make sure the trans and engine both work properly?

Electronically it would just be tuning as though it was a stick shift. The speed sensor is in the transfer case so you are golden there. Obviously the 400 will bolt to the engine and you will need the proper adapter for the transfer case. Most likely you will need to modify the drive shafts.

just gonna bump this up. Trying to sell the current dd duramax truck so buy a house and would like to get the obs up and going again, still needs a new trans and not gonna fork out a couple hundred for another used trans that who knows how long it will last. I can pick up a 400 for fairly cheap im pretty sure last time I looked

I think Skylark pretty much covered it Adam. You shouldn't have any problems besides drive shafts.

700r4/4l60E have a 27 spline verses a 4l80E/400 turbos 32 spline count, you'll need a transfer case that was bolted to a 400(early88-91 one tons)4l80e/nv4500, or swap the input in your current transfer case to a 32 maybe lengthen/shorten driveshafts

I've been thinking about doing this exact swap to my truck when the 700r4 takes a dump, mines a 6 lug 3/4 4x4

Untill you start paying for extra gas that you burn when your turning 3krpm on the freeway. 400=no overdrive and i seen my mistake use a built 700 not a 4l60e they are the same internally.

Try a built 4l60e it'll shift real firm at wot but will hold a lot of power and abuse

Adam is a service tech. He's very aware of all of the pros and cons. Most of it I would assume to be that the truck isn't worth the amount it would cost of a build 4L60.
