A while back my trip meter decided to stop working. It is currently stuck at 9.9 miles and will not roll over to 10 mi. I've reset it a few times and eventually it will climb back to 9.9 miles after I travel 50+ miles. The odometer and everything else in the instrument cluster is working perfectly. Does anyone know how to fix the trip meter?

There's a plastic gear on the trip meter that is very prone to cracking. The little plastic gear is just pressed on so when it cracks it gets loose and will not turn... not the best design

sent from what use to be a great country...

You can boneyard another cluster from a similar year to your truck and simply take the trip meter out of it, instead of swapping the whole cluster, to keep your truck's mileage correct. Taking the cluster apart is very simple. 1995-up has 3 tabs you depress the release the lens/bezel assembly, then gently pry around the gauge face to pull it away from the housing. Once in there it's a couple screws to remove the trip meter/odometer assembly.

The usual cause of trip meter failure, BTW, is resetting it while in motion. Only do so when stopped.

Thought I'd add a little pictorial persuasion...

Lens/bezel separated and you can see the tab arrangement -

Gauge face gently pried away from housing, I use a door panel tool -

(What's holding it together are the studs on the back of the gauges, pressed into sockets in the housing)

Closer view of odometer/tripmeter assembly -

Simple to remove the ribbon cable from the circuit board then go for the screws on the assembly.

Great time to replace any bad bulbs in the cluster. :)

When you pull the gauge face plastic off of the cluster, make sure to grab the little rubber on the end of the trip meter plunger first. It'll go flying & you'll never find it if you don't. (How do I know this? Hmmm...!)
Haha will do thanks

Speaking of, is there anywhere I can buy some of those little rubber nubs? Car wash goons have made them dissappear from both of my trucks over the years. I always check junk yard clusters and they're ALWAYS gone.
