Well if you go boost make sure to get a marine intake or else you'll always be lean.

absolutely, it doesn't have to be the marine specifically, but that is the easiest and most economical route. you'll definantly need more fuel.

I would always suggest boosting an old engine first as a learning experience. Why learn to tune on a new engine? I boosted my stock 305 about 3 years ago, thinking that if I break an engine, it won't be a new engine. The 305 is still going strong.
