I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but I'm going to ask anyway.
When I'm starting my truck (5.0L), it'll crank over a few times, and then the starter disengages and spins out. Hot, cold, doesn't matter. Actually gets a little worse in extreme cold and will occasionally just spin without engaging for a few cranks.
Time to replace it? I haven't had a bad starter since my 87 Crown Vic wagon (oddly, also a 5.0L), so the symptoms are a little fuzzy in my brain.
