On my truck i have the old bead style cat with a cap on the top and bottom. Ive been considering removing the cat for a deeper tone but would emptying the beads out be the same as cutting the cat out and putting a straight pipe through? I currently have shorties and a straight 3 inch from the cat back and don't have to worry about emissions around here. Also I tow about 1200-1500 pounds regularly, would the larger exhaust and reduced back pressure cause a loss of power.

If you don't need a cat for visual inspection, then cut it off. If you do need it for inspection then hollow it out.

A 3" exhaust is fine. True dual exhaust with out an"x" or "H" pipe is where you lose power.
