So I’m one year in and I still haven’t gotten the truck on the road for legal issues. Still missing a cat and can’t exactly find someone these days to let me pass it. Couple weeks ago I did a 0-60 test on the truck and got 10.3 seconds. I was pretty bummed out but skeptical because I feel like the truck should be faster than that stock. Keep in mind that my truck is a ‘96 Chevy 1500 extended cab 2wd with the 5.7 Vortec. I did an oil change, switched to a spectre air filter, changed the spark plugs and got brand new tires. I was wondering if you guys with extended cabs also got similar numbers doing a 0-60 or maybe something’s wrong with my truck. Or maybe I’m not launching it right. Help?

What gears? What transmission? Locking differential? Does the throttle open all the way?

You're in California. Buy a catalyst, install it, get the thing registered. Without the cat, it's sculpture, not a vehicle.

The "Spectre" air filter was a waste of effort. Oiled-gauze filters sometimes don't "play nice" with MAF sensors.

The thing is I can’t find a cat, the truck never came with an engine sticker when I got it. I do have a normal stp air filter laying on my shelf so maybe I can still replace it. I’m not exactly sure what gears and transmission it has, it does have a 4 speed automatic and I’m pretty sure the throttle does it job. A little more about the missing catalytic converter, I checked under the truck and apparently it’s been welded with a pipe so it only has one instead of two.

I would say that sounds pretty normal -10.5 seconds, when considering what condition and miles on truck? I’d be more focused on finding out exactly what I had and getting it running right.

Summit sells the cats. If you were closer I'd sell you mine. Check the RPO codes in the glove box, that will tell everything about the truck. Trans is a 4L60, gears prolly 3.42s but who knows. Why were the cats cut off, knowing it won't pass in Commifornia??

For 90s technology I think that’s about as good as your going to get stock

How did you do your 0-60 test?
If you don't know what the engine/trans/gears in the truck are, what are you basing your performance expectations on?
What do you mean by "can't find a cat"?

My 88 C1500 RCSB 5.7L TBI 700R4 with 3.42 gears did 11.3 in 0-60 before I started messing with it. Changing from 3.42s to 4.11s gave me ~3/10ths of a second in 0-60 and 1/4 mile. YMMV
