I think the nv3500 is under rated at 350+ tq, as the nv4500 states it is good for 500+ tq...I am pushing mine past the advertised rating with out problems ...I see a lot of guys pushing the 4500 with a 1000+...I really think it is more how you take care of it and how you use it....run synthetic oil and don't dump the clutch, maxing it out can cause you damage....sometimes its just that simple...

Exactly! Appreciate the trans for what it is & drive it as such!
Thrashing on one, power shifting, clutch drops, or just bad habits, even when a V6 is in front of them, can break 'em.
It's all about being smooth. Even with more than 'normal' H.P. levels, they can be shifted quickly, just as long as they aren't loaded up & hit hard by dropping the clutch as it's shifted. But it ain't no M-22, or T-56!!
I find the gear ratios are a bit funky, though. Notably 2-3. And I prefer a mechanical linkage. The hydro one in these trucks gives the clutch a somewhat 'import' feel.

Agreed on how you use it. I don't drive my pickup like a pissed off teenager but I do use it to tow fairly often. Something the 3500 just wasn't built for.

Word :smoke2:. They are nice but can cost alot more if you don't find a deal. Plus they are typically in work pigs, so the ones i've come across were either beat to or were used heavly in an obvious plow truck (no thanks).

If you have a 4.3 or 5.0 I wouldnt completely shut out a nv3500 trans as it is probably adequate. My dad got a used 60k mile nv3500 from a junkyard and put it in his 4.3l truck, 100k later still shifts fine (was driving it over thanksgiving).

If you can find an NV4500 for 500 used, I would get that over any (either new, or used) NV3500 any day of the week.

Rebuilding an NV3500 isn't that bad. I got mine apart in an afternoon. I realized somewhere along the way it was too far gone, and didn't bother putting it back together, but it's not overly difficult if you are willing to improvise when it comes to special tools.

I've heard NV4500s are easier. Never had one apart, so I can't say.

I wound up grabbing a used NV3500 as it was available. I searched around and only found one used trans at a junkyard, a '95 NV3500 with 200'000 kms on it for $565. That was unreasonable IMO. The one I got out of a parts truck for considerably less.

If I could have found a '4500, I would have grabbed it in a heartbeat. I'm still on the lookout for one, even though my truck is shifting happily at the moment. If one comes up in the $500 price range, I'll be grabbing it to rebuild and eventually stick in my truck.

my engine is a simple smog-dog 350, 211,+++.++ miles, and 20 years old... the replacement will be %100 stock, only ported/polished with beefy lifters.... an electric fan would be nice...

but yeah... you'd think CA... the state with 4xs more cars than people... it would be easy to find parts.... nope
