Hi, i need to replace my cats and i figured that i might as well as replace the stock exhaust system at the same time (muffler has a few holes as well). My truck is a 1998 1500 4x4 5.7 Vortec with shorty headers, after crawling underneath and looking at the way that the piping is run none of the kits that i have seen online are going to be remotely possible to use. I was wondering what "kits" that others have used and what kind of sound that you got from that kit.. Any input will be greatly appreciated

This will put you in the right place to look. Then I would go to an Exhaust shop and have the rest done. You could even go with individual cats and run duals. I dumped a single on the side. As far as mufflers go. Youtube FLowmaster Super 10, Flowmaster 40, Thrush Turbo Muffler and see what you like. Those are just some examples, there is many more different mufflers out there that sound good. This is about an hour or two worth of research and then purchase what you want.

Does having the flowmaster cats for an example make much of a difference from the OEM parts? There is about a 100 dollar price difference is why i ask

I have been looking at the Flowmaster cats. My original ones are okay, but the factory bends look very restrictive and the Flowmaster unit looks to be mandrel bends. Is there really much of an improvement by changing from stock to the Flowmaster or Magnaflow cats, or is it mostly a stock replacement unit?

You will have to check on that. The ones I found for my tbi truck were, but I chose not to get it and hollowed my cat since I don't have a second oxygen sensor. It should say in the description
