I hit them with everything! Dryer sheets, mothballs, Irish Spring, poison blocks w/peanut butter and traps w/peanut butter.
I bait traps and toss out the bait blocks in the fall when temperature starts to drop at night and in the spring. I set up to 20 traps. I butter the bait blocks on two sides so I can toss them in to corners or under vehicles etc, and they will always land with a buttered side up. I do 15-20 blocks.
Twice a year works for me in northern Ohio. Maybe be different other places. If it’s parked in the pole barn for a week or more the rest of the stuff stays in/goes back in, the vehicle.
Keep in mind, unless you live next to a grain elevator, there is a finite number of mice around your storage building. Hit them hard and it will take a while for the next batch to show up.
It might seem extreme, or a lot of work, or expensive, but it’s nothing compared trying to clean out a dash, or never getting the smell out, or repairing wiring.
I despise coyotes! They ended wild cats, outdoor cats, and most barn cats. I had vehicles stored in unsecured buildings that were basically in the brush/mouseheaven. As long as I left one panel of a door knocked out, I had zero problems. Zero! - For years!
I hate coyotes.
