The shim is to help align the the starter gear with the fly wheel. Some want a shim so the starter doesnt stay engaged when the truck fires up, and some need shims to make them stop making a zzzzzzzzzzzz noise. You will know the sound if you have heard it. It just helps the starter not engage all the way to the bottom of the gears.

Sounds like there its hitting the flywheel or something. A clicking sound
