Since this thread is already on the subject nv4500 info, I have the 95 trans with the un-synchronized first. When it comes time for a rebuild could i possibly put the low gear parts from a 96+ trans to synchronize low? I know it's the same ratio so they shouldn't be too much different right?

That's why I said if you needed a heavy duty trans - the Getrag is anything but. You wouldn't find it in a 2500 (8600 gvwr) or 3500.

I had an 89 2500 8lug 4.10s w/ get rag tranny did just fine. For 400k it only needed a clutch.

You need a new mainshaft and gears but the case can house it. Everything else works though, I bought a high ratio kit for cheap and had 4 pieces left iirc. Honestly if your clutch is good there isn't much benefit to synchro 1st and reverse.

Which Getrag? The light duty 5 speed? Swapped in then, because an '89 2500 8lug would have come with an SM465 for a manual trans.

My buddy ran the light duty 5 speed behind a big block for quite a while, romping on it from time to time, until the case broke open.

Not sure which Getrag, it was stock gm as far as I know. Family owned it's whole life behind a 6.2l.

I don't think just driving them kills them. I've heard a few people say they drove them for a long time w/ no issues. But I'm here to tell you now that you can't tow with them. I never even towed in 5th and went through two before I went to nv4500.

On a side note behind an anemic 6.2 they should live forever. I do love those 6.2's though. My 83 w/ 4.10s and a sm465 got almost 20 mpg.

I feel that in 4lo 1st w/ 4.56 I could make the earth change rotation.

I understand that, my Rubicon might not be a power house but with a 4.46 1st gear, 4:1 lowrange tcase and 4.10s I am at like 3mph at around 5200rpm lol, the front and rear air locked D44s are cool too. Back to the thread tho, OP you said this is going in a 454 SS why not a t5 or t56?

Yeah probably shouldn't tow, ours pulled a trailer almost every day of its life though. We beat on that truck until it wore us out then replaced it with my 94 and had multiple trans and clutch issues.

I've never had an issue w/ 6.2 or 6.5l being underpowered for any job. That's just me though.
