How does an Independent Front Suspension "IFS" work?

Well this may be a pretty dumb question but can someone explain to me how the independent front suspension works on these trucks with the torsion bars and all that and the different parts and such? I ask this because eventually I would like to do a RCX 6inch lift and when i read about the installation I am totaly lost. So if anyone can help me that would be great!!
