i can put it in reverse and i can feel it engage but it feels like something is holding it back at first then it goes a little better what can this be pretty sure its 4l60E

When was the last time you changed the transmission fluid? sounds like its a slight slip, if you give the truck a few seconds after putting it in reverse does it improve?

change the fluid and see if that helps, burnt/old/low fluid is the cause of most transmission issues

i heard its not great to flush the tranny... ??

well if its the same **** in there from 98 or whenever its certainly not good, fresh fluids often help a moving part. Ive changed my tranny fluid every 15k and Im on a 4L60e with 233k and no problems so far and thats after heavy towing at least once a week.

I wouldn't do a flush, just a fluid and filter change. You might want to add some Lucas Transmission Fix http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=29&catid=9&loc=show&headTitle=%20-%20Lucas%20Transmission%20Fix I added some to my truck when I changed the filter and it seemed to help.
