In 88 k became v for square body as gmt400 was out. A bit of a laugh as Suburban for 88 came with a v10 label

Yup the new truck design had the C/K designations, so they used R in place of C, and V in place of K. My old '90 GMC Burb was a R2500(2wd, 3/4 ton).
Further confusing things, GMC went to the 1500/2500/3500 designations for weight class before Chevy did.
