I need help determining the value of a used/core transmission. I have a 4x4 nv4500 external slave cylinder transmission. The year is approximately 1995 or 96, unknown miles, and it made grindy noises when moved around the lot. Grindy noises were still present but much quieter when sitting still, clutch engaged. All was well when clutch disengaged. As for other symptoms, it shifted fine before grindy noises appeared. It was behind a 6.5 diesel in a 2500. I have a guy who is interested in the thing, but since I rarely have manual transmissions around, I'm fairly clueless on it's value. Any opinions on value are appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

95 was the last year of the external slave and 96 was an internal. 95 is also the most desirable year because it had the improved gear ratios which made 1st gear a little more streetable. And the 6.5 bellhousing is the most desirable bellhousing as its steel instead of aluminum and much stronger. and I think the 6.5 had the steel tail shaft housing also but I could be wrong on that.

So, if it is a 95 with the steel bellhousing you have a unicorn. The bellhousing alone is worth over $500. The trans, if it was in good working condition or freshly rebuilt from a reputable rebuilder with receipts can be in the $1500 or more range. If it needs all new internals drop that to $500 range as a core. If it just needs syncros, around $800-1000. If it was just a throw-out bearing then that's part of a normal install and you can consider it in good working condition.

Of course price depends on who is buying it. If the buyer has been looking for that unicorn for years then you can certainly ask more and worst he can do is negotiate down.

1992-1994 :) or 1991-1994, depending on who you trust. I haven't seen one come in a 1991 model but they're probably out there. It seems the first 1991 3500HD's were all 4L80E (first year for that) and the NV4500's didn't hit the scene in them until 1992.

I thought 94 was the first year for the more street friendly 1st and 2nd gear but still no synchronizers

1991-1993 had the non-synchronized low and reverse.
1994 apparently had synchronized low and reverse. (which is news to me)
1995 was 1st year for the more "streetable" gearing, but still had the old style bellhousing and external slave cylinder.
1996 was the integrated slave cylinder/release bearing style.

There's a good bit of conflicting info out there though..

Mine are 2wd but I'll give my experience. I jumped on a used good 97 trans with the bellhousing an shifter for 1000. I had to replace the input shaft, so I did new bearings for it an fresh MT85 oil change. About $1300 all in on it.

I sold my leaking, 3rd an 4th badly grinding 99 trans with the aluminum bellhousing for $400. I probably could have gotten more but I was just glad to have a good working trans for about $900 an that one out of my garage lol.

Thank you so much for the replies. You guys have been the cheapest learning experience I've ever had! I never knew all this about the nv4500! Now, to speak intelligently with potential buyer!
