a/c problem?????

98 silverado l31-My compressor only kicks on when it wants to.. and it shuts off randomly when my a/c is on my freon is correct.. it cools excellent when the compressor is running.. compressor is new.. only thing I can think of is the stupid a/c controls in my dash I grabbed em from the junkyard Is it possible this one is messing up now? Or is it something else you guys think

Check the high and low pressure reading and if good look at the low pressure switch on the accumulator.
