Yes a larger alt is a good idea, but along with that, the big 3 upgrade is a grate upgrade. The alt out put wire that charges the battery, is very small at best. By adding a large wires to the system, this gives a larger path for electricity to flow and charge the battery. You also add the same size wires for the ground side too.

ok guys. I just read all 18 pages of that and damn. i have a 98c1500 5.0 vortec. i have already done dual batteries and seperated the passenger battery ground to the driver side to the 2nd battery and have 2 wires connecting the 2 batteries together. pg14 bottledz28 and page 16 killian posted about the coolant hose in the way. I have that issue as well as the AC line on top of the alternator doesn't have enough clearance and presses into the alternator. to get the new alternator in I had to loosen up the ac compressor bolts. the ac compressor is floating over a quarter of an inch and the line is touching the alternator. the alternator I purchased was a duralast 140a from autozone. it is bigger than the oem style one but looks similar size housing to all the upgraded variations I have seen here. any thoughts?

please be nice I'm new to working on my truck and to forums searching.

The solution is simple: GENTLY bend the lines out of the way until it all clears. I've done this conversion twice and never had an issue making it all fit. I can post pictures, if you need them.
