95-99 Column Shifter?

Doing some interior mods on my 1999 Tahoe 2DR 2WD! What I would like to know is does the knob on the end of the column shifter come off? I've tried unscrewing mine and it doesn't budge not wanting to use to much force because I don't want to screw it up if it is actually all one piece!

I thought it was one piece. I know whenever I've seen them online it's all one piece and never seen one broken. Cadillacs had a different shifter but I think gm just added upholstery
