It takes two vehicles with jumper cables and about 40 minutes to get it to turn over. My brother wrecked my jeep and gave me his truck. Drove it twice then parked it because of the blow by. It's sat about a year now. I've been a mess for awhile and am finally getting back around to it all.
The diesels *always* have battery and battery cable issues. Also, the starters are hard worked, and if it was hard starting before it went out of service, it's quite possible the starter is simply dead. I'd get new cables on the starter and batteries, try again- if no, then it needs a starter. Don't be afraid of it, you really can't hurt it, but there will be some work and cash upfront. Don't be discouraged.
