4/6 lower need to back up axle?

I welded on a new leaf spring perch on my axle to do a 4/6 drop... I know some of the kits back up the axle abit. Has anyone ever tried lowering the truck without moving the axle back abit? I don't like the wheel not being centered to the wheel well on the box... but I also don't want to bottom out the drive axle in the transmission..

Most bolt on kits move the axle back one inch.

Why do they move the axle back?

Setting the axle back an inch is also keeps the driveshaft from bottoming out in the trans.
