I had a 98 extended cab with 3:42 and ran 285's no problem. I used my truck for work and pulled a 14' trailer every day at the time too. 100k on it and it never let me down. I heard a rumor once about the 96's, they had some kind of casting issue in the block so they bored all of them 30 over. That could be why these guys with 96's can light em up with 285's. Mine wouldn't do that but it ran out fine.

how much did those run ya?

Around $400 iirc. That's for the ring and pinion and a master instal kit. I know when I bought the gears for my z71 it was $1300. That was for ring and pinion front and rear, 2 master install kits and a rear locker.

I don't believe that is true about the 96. I could be wrong but thats hard to believe.

Yes 285's and 3.42's is doable but if you had been driving your truck for a few years with 28" tall tires and then switched to 33's you would see the dramatic power loss like I did.

My vortec with 373's wont spin even one tire of the 33's i have. unless its wet or if i downshift into 1st at 4500 rpms.. then she gives a good squeak. i'd definately reccomend deeper gearing.

depends on the truck. You dont want super high gears in a diesel.

Not necessarily true:

You must be registered for see images attach

You won't even get through the front door with anything less than 4:10's.

2100 RPM at 100 KPH in OD locked up and I'm getting 440 ft/lbs at around 1900 rpm.

Can't remember if I've got 245 or 265's on there....I wanna say they're 265's, but not sure.

Used to have 285's and it would often hunt for lockup so I dropped the size. Bigger tires might drop a few rpm, but they also mean more rolling resistance and weight. Comes out kinda moot when you're only going a couple sizes either way, worse if the transmission starts hunting for gears and lockup.

Which is why I dropped a size or two.

;)

I never heard this but i know my 96 would out run a lot of other vehicles with nothing done performance wise on 35s, out ran my friends 97, a 4.6 f150, a 5.3 gmc, and a civic, and i could throw the ass end around with ease

Idk if this is true or not. Heard a few rumors but the 98s came from the factory with a bigger can than the others
