base timing question

It was installed when I bought the engine so I'm confident its in right. It's now very drivable but occasionally has issues with the timing retarding too much when it warms up. It doesn't happen often but when it does it starts backfiring through the intake and runs like hell. What would cause...

I don't know the compression ratio for certain but I think it would be close to stock. I actually set it at 0 initially and crept it up slowly but it runs very poorly until its near 12 Sent from my LG-P500 using Tapatalk 2

So dragging up a dinosaur here... Got the new engine in, running strong but I have 2 issues. I first have a knock on the drivers side but whats weird is that its the same knock as the previous engine. I pulled the 5 and 7 plugs one at a time and it actually seemed to run slightly better, lower...

I only said that since he had put it in his 1986 vette that the pump could possibly be for a serp since I doubt the guy would switch to v belts... Going with the second engine anyway so no worries with that, just the intake doesn't have the mounts for the serp system, easily overcome... Never...

thanks for the info. The motor was most recently put into a mid '80s corvette so I'm thinking the water pump on it will be for a serpentine set up but we'll see. I need to get the casting number off the block, do you guys know of any good references to decode the casting #'s?

Well, I was gonna pick up the engine this weekend but it sold yesterday. I'm now looking at this: http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/pts/2899473911.html. Guy says that it has less than 3,000 miles on it. Having already discussed the issues with the swap itself, I was wondering if there is any info...

Well where I live in Nevada smog isn't required. Also I am moving to Alaska in June so no issues there. So I can use my existing water pump and just pick up a custom chip? If so I can sell the pump ans headers and make it really cost effective it seems. Sorry, new to all this...

Yeah levels were good. If my oil pump was going then why would it only do it under load when towing and give me months of trouble free driving? Its baffled many a Mechanic friend. I had my neighbor tell me that it was a defect. Something to do with channels that didn't match up. Never heard that...
