Picked up a running 5.7 from an '88 Suburban with ~170K. I'm going to give it a good clean, paint, and rebuild/replace items as needed as I go along before putting it in my RX7 that has a 305.

-350 will get the Holley 600 carb that is currently on the 305
-350 will get the Headman Headers that is currently on the 305
-350 will get the OEM rebuild/overhaul kit from Summit
-350 will keep the stock heads

Question 1: Is swapping to carb as simple as replacing the intake manifold with the likes of an Edelbrock Performer or using a carb adapter?

Question 2: Is a cam swap worth it being that the only other potentially replaced parts would be the intake manifold and headers?

Are you looking to make power? Throw away the stock heads, buy used Vortecs with a China knock off intake, add carb and cam, then you'll be 350 hp depending on parts. If you go with that plan you have, about 230 on a good day.

I'm not opposed to doing Vortec heads, but to be honest I'm a bit new to GM power plants.

I have know I can replace stock with aftermarket, but I'll admit I'm lacking in knowing how to mix & match parts from other cars, on GM engines.

Is the swap as simple as getting Vortec heads, getting them prepped, and bolting them on the block?

Yup! Vortec heads are a direct swap. They are worlds better than the TBI heads. I would absolutely do a cam if you're going to go that far.

One catch to the vortec heads is they use a different intake bolt pattern, thus you need a vortec specific intake but they are great heads and a heck of a value.
