HELP please new pickup / sending unit isnt working ...I switched from TBI to a mechanical fuel pump and

carb setup...as a result I went from an 89 4 wire sending / fuel pump unit to an 89 carbed r2500 gmc

pickup with 2 wires. This NEW sending unit only has 2 connections ? A post on top of the sending

unit- pickup I assume goes to truck harness pink or purple... then the tank has a simple black flying lead

coming off of it with a ring terminal coming off of it that I assume must go to chassis gnd . Connected

this way I get nothing at the gage ...If I disconnect the wires altogether the gage pegs like it should ...

So the gage and wires back to the dash are working....... here is a pic of the connector I cut off I

found on the net someone marked up BUT I am not sure if it is correct ... gray I dont need as its supposedly 12 for the pump the other

two wires are black , then black with a white tracer ( I am doing nothing with these two wires so far ),

the fourth wire is purple which I assume is theee sender wire....I have a feeling these two black wires

are the missing link here but since its fuel we are dealing with I am hesitant to just try anything ......

The ring terminal that connects to the frame rail near the fuel tank needs to be grounded very well. If there's a bunch of rust or undercoating in the way of the connection it will throw the gas gauge way off, just an idea. I had the same issue not long ago.

Spent some time on it tonight ...the short run of purple sending wire from the sending unit to the three pin connector that mates to the three pin wiring harness connector on the truck is showing its shorted to ground thus why I am reading empty all the time....when I disconnect the three pin harness it immediately swings to full like it should - additionally when I measure the pink sending wire to the front of the cab it isnt shorted to ground ......so that sending unit or its purple wire hanging off it is definitely shorted somehow to ground OR the brand new float is jammed - stuck or sunk low .... the tank will have to be siphoned (uggh all 20 gallons) and dropped again SXXX lol......note to self ALWAYS check your gage is working while you have it dropped ....stupid mistake.
