Im looking forward to more.
So I'll babble a bit and let ya know where Im coming from, as I enter into this thread. I live in Westfield, Mass, so I can relate to your driving in NYC against the general lighting dumbfkry on the roads today... I have been toying around with LEDs over the last few years, ...lotta electrical voodoo threads, You Tube videos, and some sacrificial dollars into Chinesium. Still feel like a toddler playing with fire at times, but the basics of good lighting is fairly simple. Getting the "magic pixies" to make nice-nice, and produce usable light with the globalized market technology, aka Chinesium, is the real challenge...
I too had a K5 Blazer, ('87). I was in my early 20's and loved it. Served me well for a few years, but the smell of mildew led to the discovery of my bed floor having many pinholes, all due to a widespread metal-termite infestation... also discovered my rear passenger kick panels had gone MIA when a friend complained he and his girlfriend were getting splashed one rainy day. Last straw developed from an unusually bouncy seat... Upon investigation, I realized why... Stupid GM never reinforced the front seat mounts with a floor brace, so the sheetmetal flexes and eventually stress cracks. That lends itself to more metal cancer... That was about 20 years ago.
My Wife's Grandfather had a '91 Jimmy K5 plow truck. Thing was loaded with every option under the sun, same issue as yours and mine, but far worse... it wasnt remotely roadworthy, she was folding in half. Rotted under the seats so he couldnt get the doors to close anymore. He used a bungee to tie the outer door handle to the cab exterior grab bar to keep it sorta closed when parked & the same hooked to an eyebolt near the upper seatbelt anchor. Needless to say, I sorta "helped" him decide to get rid of it before he fell through the floor and killed himself....dead groundstrap, no start issue.
Anywho, I have a '92 Z71 K1500 Silverado Ext/Stepside. She'll probably be my last pickup, unless, God Forbid, something unfortunate happens to it or I hit the lottery... Took me awhile to find this one. Had her about 8 years now. I wanted a '91/'92 K1500 Z71 Xcab/stepside...they have OBD1, the "good" gauges, the "old" 700R4, and composites seemed to be a good thing. Little did I know when I started looking that these the composites really leave one wanting more. I also wanted the fabled Z71 Offroad Package... fable indeed... I wont stray into that topic here.
I also had a set of KC Daylighters on my old K5, mounted on a roof bar (drip rail mount)... had Hella Amber fog lights mounted under the front bumper... The combo did the job very well. When the old K5 went down the river, those lights moved onto a '91 S10 Blazer (4dr, 4x4, 4.3 pre-Vortec). Loved that one too. Built her into a tough little bruiser, but she & the lights died in a nasty accident in '97, (FYI drip rail light bars pop off on impact).
So, back to my '92, she was developing cataracts when I got her, so I bought a junkyard 95-99 Sport Grille/Red bowtie, some Anzo headlights, markers, and LMC clear side markers., upgraded to LMC direct power feed off the battery kit, plus the Hi-Low kit... Was good for a few years, then the headlight switch failed this fall, with the sweet aroma of burning electrical components & melting plastic. Not sure what happened exactly, but I rechecked everything, all good, new switch, no other issues. Now she's developed an occasional dim passenger headlight and it also lit up the pass highbeam dim once. Could be a loose ground screw, corrosion, or a bad wire... inevitably going to fry something. Since Im slowly building a whole new chassis, and now I have lighting troubles, I figure its a good time to start planning a better lighting system.
