I need help with the steering on my 1996 k1500 5.7. The steering just sucks. It is less than perfect. The truck bogs down when turning while stopped. Also while stopped (and holding brake) there is a popping I can feel.

Advice?

When you say the steering sucks, what do you mean exactly? (Turning radius, steering slop, power assist, etc.) Also, when you feel the popping while holding the brake down are you turning the wheel or are you just stopped? As far as the truck's idle bogging, how low does the RPMs drop? When I turn my truck's wheel at a stop the idle drops, but not enough to feel like the engine is going to die.

Well there is play as to be expected in these trucks. So yes slop but not excessive. The power assist is what seems to be the issue. The rpms drop 100-200. (Are they supposed to? When I feel the popping I am moving very slowly or completely stopped with the brake. It feels mechanical I feel it in the steering wheel.

Hmm... weird. Sounds like the pump is dying. The RPMs are not suppose to drop to 100-200. Happened to one of my friends recently and he described it the same way as you, turned out it was the pump that failed. One way to overcome the turning at idle is the rev the engine and turn the wheel, it should help the pump as a very temporary solution [emoji23][emoji23]

EDIT: Here's an excellent write up of how to replace it. http://www.gmt400.com/threads/power-steering-pump-replacement.11015/

You're welcome! I forgot to mention that the power steering pump problem my friend experienced was diagnosed and repaired by a mechanic. Good luck!
