I know what guys mean... but the first ujoint is connected to the body, which means the part that comes out of the fire wall is solid and wont move... no? Im not sure... I don't want to argue, nor do I have a 97+ truck.. im just curious ... lol

It is not connected to the body. It connects to the steering column after the column is bolted to the dash. Then it goes through a rubber dust boot. There is no extra support for that joint...

Edit: this is what the 97+ column looks like under the dash.

See how there is no extra support anywhere for that added joint...

Ah ha! I see what you guys mean now!!! And I definitely understand how the shaft would probably fall into its ujoints and lock up... not a mod id want to try:shrug:

if your wheels locked up, you could potentially kill someone!!! I didn't realise that's where the joint was, in my mind... you guys were talking about the ujoint at the tilt colum

Ya some 96s are, there's no rhyme or reason to it. Seems like it just depends on when each plant ran out of the old style column...

whats the reason for this extra ujoint in there?

and I noticed on Summitracing, you could buy just the 'rag' joint part, I guess its rubber? You could buy the disc itself, its only about 16$ not to bad... should last about another 50-100k miles!

I'm not sure but I think it has something to do with the evo steering sensor.

You can also buy a U joint that will replace the rag joint if you want to spend $100...
